About Benjamin Buckner

Ben was born and raised in Clinton, North Carolina.  The son of a small business owner and working mother, he learned from an early age the value of hard work and keeping your promises.  He is a first generation college graduate, holding a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Science from North Carolina State University and a Master’s degree in Accountancy from East Carolina University.  As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Ben works daily with small business owners and individuals to find solutions to complex tax issues and plan for the future.

History

Ben is married to Jessica Buckner, a Henderson native.  They have three children – Beau, Eleanor, and Weston.  After living in Raleigh for several years, they decided to return to small town living in 2023 to provide an upbringing for their children that was similar to what they had growing up – community, pride, and lending a helping hand to those in need.

Ben currently serves as Treasurer for Charles House Association, a non-profit daytime eldercare program providing therapeutic social engagement to seniors.  He also serves on the finance committee at Kerr-Vance Academy. In his free time, Ben enjoys spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, golf, and anything else that can get him outdoors.

Priorities

Business Development

I pledge to work with leaders to incentivize business development and empower new and current business owners in the City of Henderson. New businesses means new jobs and population growth, which will help revitalize our city and increase our property tax base, lowering the tax burden on our current residents.

Decrease the Tax Burden on Residents

In 2023, the proposed property tax rate was raised from the recommended $0.55 to $0.65 unexpectedly. I will vote no on any property tax increases outside of recommendations and will not place an additional burden on city residents in times of inflation when it is not absolutely necessary.

City Beautification

I will work with leaders to proceed with city revitalization plans. I will address homes and buildings that have fallen into disrepair. I will endorse resident ideas to combat littering and bring pride and respect back to our community.

Civility and Ethics

As a CPA, I am held to strict ethical standards. I promise to represent the city with civility and the utmost ethical standards. I will work with the city’s best interests in mind and refrain from the recent muck and mire that has consumed the city council as of late. I will be a transparent member of the city council, welcoming resident input and taking action.
